Let’s face it, whether we like to admit it or not, we all wouldn’t mind it if our bodies looked a little bit better. Be it losing a bit of fat around the belly and adding on some extra muscle on the chest, it would be quite nice if we could snap our fingers and our dream physiques just magically appeared.
Sadly, it doesn’t work like that (As I told a woman in the gym the other day who wanted to lose 2 stone in 2 weeks. When I told her it couldn’t be done her eyes filled with rage and she started arguing with me because she ‘simply had to fit into a dress she had bought for a wedding’).
Now a lot of people, especially those new to exercise and getting in shape are confused as to what needs to be done as we are constantly bombarded with differing opinions from so called ‘experts’ in magazines and Facebook articles.
Getting in Shape 101
Step 1) First off, think about your goal. Get it very, very clear in your mind and then think about WHY you want to achieve this goal. This is a terrific way of getting motivated.
Step 2) Exercise. What exercise you will need to will depend on your goal and current body composition. For most people, a solid exercise plan is a good weight training programme that sees them lifting weights 2-4 times a week in conjunction with some form of cardio that they enjoy. This could be running, cycling, rowing etc or classes at your gym.
Step 3) Nutrition. A very, very important part of changing your body and one that is greatly misunderstood. There is one simple part of nutrition that overrules everything – Calories. Yes other stuff is important such as vitamins, minerals, making sure you’re getting enough vegetables etc, but the amount of calories you eat on a daily and weekly basis is the single most important thing when it comes to changing your body.
Step 4) Keep going. It is vital that you stay motivated and of course with your nutrition and training. Life is about balance and we need to cut loose sometimes, but when it becomes a regular thing and starts interfering with your progress then that is a problem.
Summary
Yes there are only 4 points. Yes, it really is that simple. The main reason why people don’t get the bodies they want is Step 4. It’s a marathon, not a sprint (See the picture of me below. This transformation was achieved in 15 months, not 15 days.) Don’t give up and keep going!
